If sulphates clean and parabens preserve, DHT blockers are there for a different, more emotional promise: helping with thinning hair.

Many shampoos marketed for hair loss or “thickening” talk about blocking DHT. To understand what that means, we need to take a quick detour into biology.

What Is DHT?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone derived from testosterone by an enzyme called 5‑alpha reductase. In people genetically prone to androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), DHT can bind to receptors in hair follicles—especially on the crown and hairline—and gradually:

  • Shorten the hair growth (anagen) phase
  • Produce thinner, weaker strands over time
  • Eventually lead to miniaturised, almost invisible hairs

Not everyone is equally sensitive to DHT, but for those who are, it’s a major driver of pattern hair loss.

How Do DHT Blockers in Shampoos Work?

DHT‑blocking shampoos typically use plant extracts or other actives that are claimed to:

  • Inhibit 5‑alpha reductase (reduce conversion of testosterone to DHT)
  • Interfere with DHT binding at the follicle level
  • Support scalp health to create a more favourable environment for hair growth

Common DHT‑related or “hair support” ingredients you might see include:

  • Saw palmetto extract
  • Caffeine
  • Green tea extract (EGCG)
  • Pumpkin seed oil
  • Certain peptides or botanical blends

Because shampoo is rinsed off after a short contact time, the realistic expectation is supportive, not miraculous. These ingredients are more likely to:

  • Help keep the scalp in healthier condition
  • Provide a mild local effect when used consistently
  • Complement, not replace, medical treatments for hair loss

What to Watch Out For

Not all “DHT‑blocking” claims are created equal. Keep in mind:

  • The evidence for many cosmetic‑level DHT blockers is limited or preliminary compared to approved medical treatments.
  • Very bold promises (“reverses baldness fast”) are usually a red flag.
  • A harsh, irritating formula can actually make hair loss look worse by inflaming the scalp and breaking fragile hairs.

When evaluating a DHT‑focused shampoo, look beyond the buzzwords:

  • Does it use gentle cleansers that don’t strip the scalp?
  • Does it avoid common irritants for sensitive skin (overly strong sulphates, heavy fragrance, etc.)?
  • Are the “active” ingredients supported by at least some human or lab data, not just marketing copy?

Where DHT‑Blocking Shampoos Fit In

Think of DHT‑blocking shampoos as part of an overall hair‑care strategy rather than a standalone cure. They can:

  • Help maintain a healthier environment for existing hair
  • Support other approaches you might be using (like lifestyle, nutrition, or medical treatments recommended by a professional)
  • Give you a routine that’s kinder to your scalp, instead of making things worse with harsh cleansers

The bigger picture? What’s in your shampoo matters: strong sulphates can irritate, poorly chosen preservatives can compromise safety, and over‑promised actives can raise false hopes. A well‑designed formula respects both the science and the sensitivity of your scalp—cleaning effectively, preserving safely, and using active ingredients with realistic, honest claims.

Once you understand what each ingredient family does—sulphates, parabens, and DHT blockers—you’re no longer just trusting the front of the bottle. You’re reading the back label like a chemist.
